New food packaging solution from Milacron hitting shelves in Asia

Milacron Holdings has announced that its Klear Cans, in partnership with S&W Fine Foods International (a Del Monte Pacific Ltd. company), have started hitting shelves in Seoul, South Korea and Shanghai, China with Milacron believing that this could revolutionize the canning industry.

Milacron has released new clear packaging.

After successful market testing, the Milacron Klear Can was chosen by S&W Fine Foods International for its pineapple slices and chunks. The plastic packaging enables consumers to see the food inside and judge its freshness prior to purchasing.

Milacron invented the Klear Can to replace metal packaging and expects that it will be feasible for any number of food products, including soups, meats, produce, and more.

“The Klear Can’s unique crystal-clear transparency allows Brands to demonstrate the true quality of their products to consumers – starting at the critical moment in store where most consumers make their purchase decisions,” the press release stated.

The Klear Can is made from a patented, co-injection molded, polypropylene EVOH plastic. It is BPA-free for safe food contact, recyclable, and also fully microwaveable. It can withstand temperatures up to 130°C and has third-party tested its seal integrity to ensure it is safe and reliable.

Steve Morris, President of Milacron Systems, said, “We’ve gained a tremendous amount of in-house technical knowledge during the development of Klear Can, which allows us to support our customers and the industry in the adoption of this ground-breaking technology. Klear Can is a natural extension of Milacron’s industry-leading co-injection molding expertise.”

The can comes in a one-piece design that Milacron believes will be easy for co-packers to integrate into their processes with minimal tooling additions or customization. The release continued, “Converters are able to take advantage of the co-injection molded can with its repeatable and proven process using materials that are available globally.”

Milacron insists that its product is better than three-piece, extruded competitors because it maintains its clarity on the shelf. It is also in-mold lable (IML) compatible, “using the same industry standard can ends, filling, seaming and retorting machinery as metal cans.”

Milacron CEO, Tom Goeke added, “After years of development and strong positive consumer results, we’re excited to have S&W Fine Foods International on-board as a partner to launch the Milacron Klear Can in key global markets. We are also thrilled about the prospect of transforming the metal can industry.”
